HAZZAN DAVID B. SISLEN
cantorsislen@herjc.org
David B. Sislen began his musical and cantorial training even before his Bar Mitzvah, and he was first called to chant High Holiday services at the age of 15. In the years that followed, he continued his studies while serving in a part-time capacity for several congregations in the Washington, DC area. Since 1996, he has served congregations in Gaithersburg, Maryland and St. Petersburg, Florida before coming to HERJC in July, 2010.
Hazzan Sislen graduated from the University of Maryland in 1988 in with a BA in Theater Design. For over 15 years, he worked as a theatrical lighting designer in theaters up and down the East Coast, including The Kennedy Center, Arena Stage, Constitution Hall, and off-Broadway in New York, before devoting himself to the cantorate full-time.
Deeply rooted in the traditional Eastern European style of hazzanut, Hazzan Sislen strives to maintain the long held musical traditions of Ashkenazic Judaism, while at the same time incorporating musical and stylistic innovations that keep the service fresh, interesting, and spiritually rewarding. In addition, he has composed many original pieces of liturgical music ranging from congregational melodies to cantorial solos for special occasions. Three of his compositions were published in Zamru Lo, a new collection of congregational melodies published by the Cantors Assembly. He has appeared in concert and at special events as a solo artist, with groups of cantors, and with various choirs. Hazzan Sislen is dedicated to bringing the traditional Jewish liturgical repertoire to as wide an audience as possible.
Hazzan Sislen was accepted into the Cantors Assembly in 2000, and currently serves on that organization’s Membership Committee, as well as on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Synagogue Music. In 2002, he was one of the founding members of the Bay Area Cantorial Association, a cooperative of Cantors and Cantorial Soloists from across the Tampa Bay region.
